Hearing Assessment
Hearing is one of our most important senses. It allows us to connect with the world around us, to communicate with others, and to enjoy the sounds of life. That’s why it’s so important to take care of our hearing and to get regular hearing tests.
Why is hearing important?
Hearing plays a vital role in our lives. It helps us to:
- Communicate with others
- Learn and grow
- Stay safe
- Enjoy life
Why are hearing tests important?
Hearing tests are important for several reasons. They can help to:
- Detect hearing loss early
- Prevent further hearing loss
- Improve your communication and quality of life
How often should you get a hearing test?
The frequency of hearing tests depends on your age and risk factors for hearing loss. In general, it is recommended that adults get a hearing test every 2-3 years. However, you should get a hearing test more often if you:
- Are over the age of 50
- Have a family history of hearing loss
- Are exposed to loud noise on a regular basis
- Have certain medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease
If you are concerned about your hearing, or if you have not had a hearing test in the past few years, please make an appointment with your Audiologist.
What to expect at the time of your appointment for your hearing assessment?
History
As a part of the history, the audiologist will ask you questions on your hearing, lifestyle, and health to have a better understanding your hearing needs and customise the care accordingly. History also allows the audiologist to rule out any sinister conditions and if needed, we can make appropriate referrals to other professionals.
Ear examination
The ear examination is conducted using an Otoscope, checking for the health of the outer ear, ear canal and ear drum. The examination also checks for wax. Based on the findings, sometimes we may need to refer to other professionals.
Hearing test
A hearing test is a simple and painless way to check your hearing. During a hearing test, you will be asked to listen to a variety of sounds at different frequencies and volumes. The results of your hearing test will help to determine if you have any hearing loss.
Test results
The Audiologist will go through your hearing test results and discuss further steps, ranging from hearing aids and future follow up.
